Snoring, Sleep Apnea and Remedies

Heavy snoring could be a sign of sleep apnea amongst other symptoms.  It happens when air flows past relaxed tissues in the back of the throat. One in three men and one in four women do it, according to Statistics Canada.  If you’re a smoker or consume alcohol , have allergies, are overweight or generally are sleep deprived there’s a good chance that you snore and even have sleep apnea .

There are various treatments to choose from : nasal strips to CPAP machines . Even surgery is an option in some cases.

Implant Helps Sleep Apnea Patients

An implanted device could reduce  sleep apnea symptoms by 70% according to a study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine .

The device is called UAS ( Upper Airway Stimulation) and it works by stimulating the tongue,  which has become relaxed during sleep, so that it doesn’t block the airway.  A mild electric current stimulates the tongue to go back to it’s original position. This device was chosen to be tried on patients who could not tolerate the use of the CPAP machine.

Smartphones and Sleep

If you have a smartphone it’s probably disrupting your sleep .  The strength of the bright  light emitting from the smartphone or other device could be interfering with melatonin – a hormone that helps control the natural sleep-wake cycle .   A Mayo Clinic study suggests dimming the brightness of the light  and holding the device at least 14″ from one;s face.

Sleep Apnea and Hypertension

Sleep apnea could contribute to hard-to-treat hypertension according to a preliminary research conducted on 248 patients.

Our findings suggest that severe OSA contributes to poor blood pressure control despite aggressive medication use,” Harneet Walia, MD, study author and assistant professor of family medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, said in a statement. “This is important as poor blood pressure control in patients taking multiple anti-hypertensive medications makes them particularly vulnerable to increased cardiovascular risk.”

Heart disease has already been linked to sleep apnea and besides hypertension atrial fibrillation could be worsened because of sleep apnea !
