Dr. Joseph Q. Henkle: Sleep deprivation is unhealthy

Sleep deprivation reflects poor sleep quality usually caused by sleep disorders like sleep apnea. Sleep deprivation causes excessive sleepiness, inadequate performance and decreased energy levels. Lack of enough sleep also affects our memory, causing reduced capacity to retain or concentrate.

Sleep deprivation also occurs in the setting of poor sleep quality, which is often caused by sleep disorders (eg sleep apnea). In these situations, getting extra sleep does not alleviate the sleep deprivation symptoms. Symptoms of sleep deprivation may

Sleeping less than 7 hours could lead to hypertension, heart attacks and weight gain. Adequate sleep could resolve most of the symptoms sited otherwise a sleep study could reveal any sleep disorders causing those problems.
