News: Rare Disease Affects Long Island Girl

A rare diseae called ROHHAD, Rapid onset Obesity and Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation, causes “uncontrollable obesity and extreme sleep apnea”.   A 5 year old girl in Bayport is battling this rare disorder.  She has to wear a breathing tube, has to have blood tests and be close to a monitor which alerts of any changes in her oxygen count.

The type of ailment, which causes uncontrollable obesity and extreme sleep apnea, has less than eighty documented cases worldwide. The disease was discovered years ago, and named in 2007 after twenty-three children were studied.

A year ago her parents observed a sudden weight gain. She has episodes of involuntary urination and has developed a benign tumor in her abdomen.
