Are Trucking Companies allowing drivers with Sleep Apnea on the road?

It’s estimated that 28% of commercial drivers’ license holders suffer from sleep apnea. Furthermore driver fatigue is already an issue for healthy drivers but sleep panea places everybody’s lives in jeopardy. Driving for long hours, trying to meet deadlines could worsen the situation.

John died as a result of the accident and in the legal battles that emerged in the aftermath of the accident his widow has learned that the accident might have been avoidable: the driver of the truck that hit them had sleep apnea.

Safety regulations should be stricter and more universal, covering all States. Programs should be created to identify high risk drivers susceptible to sleep apnea. Also employers and their commercial drivers should be provided with guidance regarding the identification and treatment of sleep apnea as it was suggested by The National Safety Board in 2009.
