Cyberonics invests in sleep apnea treatment – Yahoo! Finance

An implant designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea is expected to begin clinical trials in the US soon. Im Thera’s neurostimulation device uses an electrode to control certain muscles of the tongue thus clearing air passageways. It’s an experimental device and the company is trying to get approval from the European Union.

One of the causes of sleep apnea is the collapse of the soft tissue at the back of the throat thus obstructing the passage of air to the lungs. This stoppage of breathing could last a few seconds or until the brain wakes you up alerting you of lack of oxygen intake.
