The FMCSA wants to register the medical personnel who examine the truck drivers and provide guidelines for drivers diagnosed with sleep apnea and who would have to use the CPAP machine.
Also truckers would need to use their CPAP machines while in the truck’s sleeper berth ; this would cause some complications
associated with the engagement of the CPAP machine in the designated location.
The federal government is eager to promote more use of assisted-breathing machines by truck drivers beset with sleep apnea, although fleet and vendor executives said there are problems with using the machines in tractor sleeper berths.
Sleep apnea has been mentioned a few times in truckers’ accidents in the past.
